VPS.net’s 12 Days of Christmas – 5 Golden Rings
5 Golden Rings… could they be wedding rings? What about the Lord of the Rings? Find out the true meaning of the 5 Golden Rings and also 5 other rings that symbolize unity.
As we march past the halfway point of our Twelve Days of Christmas, it’s hard not to think of how many gifts we’ve already received from our true love. These gifts range from pipers to geese to milking maids. The fifth day of Christmas is no less bizarre: 5 golden rings.
5 golden rings is actually a reference to the first five books of the Old Testament. These books are commonly referred to as the Pentateuch, or “Torah” in Hebrew. These books are the central concept of Judaism, and are a staple for most Christian religions. Within these books are the stories of the Creation, Adam and Eve, and Noah’s Ark.
We also see 5 rings appear every 2 years when we watch the Olympic games. The 5 colored rings are the standard symbol for the Olympics. The Olympics represent a time of unity and culture as countries from all over the world come together. For 17 days, countries set aside their differences and athletes compete at the absolute highest level of competition.
These rings must represent some kind of symbol such as freedom, right? Pretty close. The symbol of these 5 colored rings actually represents the 5 different inhabited continents involved in the Olympics. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the French co-founder of the modern Olympic Games, designed the traditional symbol in 1912. The colors are even more symbolic than the rings, according to Coubertin. The blue, yellow, black, green, and red on top of the white background represent all of the colors of the countries participating in the games from around the world. Coubertin stated that the colored rings are “truly an international symbol”.
The Olympic rings have held strong for over 100 years. During every Olympic games, both summer or winter, we can count on seeing that pure white flag and the vibrant colored rings. There is no doubt that there is unrest in this world, but the Olympics bring a sense of much-needed unity.
Just as the Olympics bring peace into our lives, so does the Christmas season. This time of year is perfect to experience a little more peace, love, and happiness. As we forget about ourselves for the next 5 days, we can realize how much we value our relationships with the ones we love.
