VPS.net's 12 Days of Christmas – 12 Drummers Drumming
To invite the Christmas spirit this year, VPS.net is giving everyone the chance to think a little more in-depth about the classic Christmas carol “The 12 Days of Christmas.”
For years we’ve heard “The Twelve Days of Christmas” playing as lights go up around the city. Now, we’ll be going on a journey through each of the 12 days. Although the original song starts on December 25th and goes on until January 6th, we’re changing things a bit this year and starting 12 days before Christmas so that you can fill every day before Christmas with holiday cheer!
On the 12th day of Christmas, VPS.net gave to me…12 Drummers Drumming!
Who are these mysterious drummers? According to Catholic tradition, the 12 drummers is a reference to the 12 points of belief in The Apostles’ Creed. This Creed is sometimes referred to as the Symbol of the Apostles and contains the core beliefs of many Christian denominations.
For most of us, we picture 12 literal drummers banging along on their snare drums. The magical sound of drums fills the air as Christmas approaches. There is something to be said about the combination of drums, sleigh bells, and sometimes a soothing saxophone (any Kenny G fans?) These sounds really bring in that sweet Christmas feeling.
As Christmas music starts playing on the radio, my mind instantly adjusts to full-on Christmas mode. It is fascinating what music can do to our attitudes. To some, the onslaught of Christmas music brings negative feelings about the pressure of having to buy gifts and spending countless hours in lines, all while battling obnoxious crowds. To others, the sound of Christmas music brings a sense of warmth, love and excitement to the holiday season.
There is also the debate of when it is too soon to play Christmas music. For most, it is entirely acceptable to listen to Christmas music the day after Thanksgiving. Some disagree, and say December 1st is a valid starting point. Some will even refuse to listen to any Christmas music until the week before Christmas because the songs get so overplayed and repetitive. How many times have you already heard “Jingle Bells” this year?
Whether or not you leave your iPod shuffled on a Christmas playlist doesn’t matter. What matters is that you take the time this holiday season to spend time with those you love. The harmonious sound of 12 drums is just one of many ways to invite that holiday cheer into your life!
