The New Solar System
.solar is about to go stellar…
Today, the new top-level domain .solar goes on sale. But, as ground-breaking as the release of new domain names onto the internet is, it’s only the second-biggest news story in solar today. Today, at 3pm, the Solar Impulse 2 plane was unveiled in Switzerland.
If you’ve not heard the name before, this plane is the world’s first perpetual endurance aircraft that’s able to fly night and day without any fuel.
The Solar Impulse 2 project team has been working on the plane for the past 12 years – that accounts for 10 percent of the aviation history timeline. The team is made up of everyone from Formula 1 engineers to fighter pilots.
The plane is already a record-breaker. In 2010, the prototype plane set the record for the first night flight in a solar-powered plane, which lasted 26 hours, 10 minutes and 19 seconds. It also set a record for reaching the highest altitude of a solar-powered aircraft, by reaching 9,235 meters. However, next year, the Solar Impulse 2 team intend to take the plane on a round-the-world trip.
And the circum-navigation of the globe will just be the beginning of it. The plane’s grand revealing looks set to change to world of solar energy forever. Some of the technology on the aircraft doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world. However, in the next few years, these solar advances look set to trickle down into the home appliance market, revolutionizing things like fridges, cars, and maybe even computers. After all, it’s already possible to power a Raspberry Pi using solar panels.
The conclusion? Far from being written off as a unattainable renewable energy, solar looks set to go stellar. Best get that .solar domain before it’s too late then.
