While Amsterdam hogs the tourism limelight in North Holland, Haarlem is the sort of place that waits patiently in the wings. But this town is worthy of more than understudy status.
Set around the squiggle of the River Sparme, Haarlem is Holland in a nutshell. Sails cartwheel around the body of a windmill that’s been an icon for the town since the 18th century. And Elm trees balance on the edges of one of Holland’s oldest canals, the Bakenessergracht.
Haarlem is also the eye of the needle as far as Holland’s flower-growing industry is concerned. The tulip fields on the edge of the town are psychedelic in the spring.
Insider Travel Tips From Jim, Director Of Infrastructure
Eat: Pasta di Mamma’s not Dutch, but its Italian menu has turned Jim into a regular customer.
Drink: Stempels pub is located inside a former printing office. There’s a good wine cellar in the basement, and in the spring and summer you can sit outside on the paved terrace.
See: Ten Boom’s House is Haarlem’s equivalent of Anne Frank’s House. During the war, the Ten Boom family hid jews here. They were discovered by the Nazis in 1944.
Shop: Saturday is market day on the Grote market place in Haarlem. Stalls are stacked with cheeses the size of SKY satellite dishes, fresh waffles, flowers and clothes.
