Technology Teachings For Your Elders!
We often talk about the importance of providing technology education to school-aged children, but we rarely take the time to think of older generations who have to keep up with the ever-evolving digital age.
Grandmas and grandpas across the country are pulling out their cellphones and cursing the heavens for making the buttons so small. In reality, the problem isn’t actually the size of the buttons, it is mostly the rapid pace at which technology continues to advance, which they are sometimes struggling to keep up with.
Moore’s Law predicted that the processing power of computers would double every 18 months, and this has held true for the last 50 years. This allows the world to constantly build upon each layer of developed technology. Those who use technology every day will hardly notice the difference, but for those who have never needed technology in their daily life the learning curve can be quite steep. The good news is that there is a new trend developing that encourages older generations to participate and explore the changing technologies.
According to Pew Research Center, America’s seniors are joining their younger compatriots in their use of technological devices. Grandma and grandpa are Tweeting, posting, emailing and streaming in record numbers. In the year 2000, only 14% of Americans ages 65 and over were using the internet, but by 2013 that number had grown to 59%. The internet has quickly become an important resource for seniors for news, government services and health resources, but also for social networking and contact with friends and family nearby and overseas.
While the Internet is becoming more popular among the elder generation, there are many reasons why seniors opt out of having an online presence. Some have perceptions that it’s going to be difficult to learn the new technologies, while others are unsure about the safety and quality of information found on the web. This is where we can help.
