A Board Game Of Thrones
Ever wanted to be the Lord of Casterly Rock and sing The Rains of Castamere? Well the opportunity might just be round the corner…
Here at VPS.NET we’re not ashamed to say that we’re geeks. We have an office calendar counting down to the release of the new Star Wars film (although we remain sceptical as to just how good it will be) and now we’ve got another addition to make: a countdown to the release of Game of Thrones Monopoly.
We’ve been feeling a little out of sorts over the past year, primarily because we’ve not been getting our fix of Westerosi news. We tried (and failed) to learn Dothraki, and wore black cloaks to the office for weeks in the pretence that we were men (and women) of the Night’s Watch, guarding the realm of east London. Nothing we did, however, made up for the lack of Game of Thrones in our lives (although we joined House Forrester in this game), and with another two months to wait until the next season (and probably another few years until the next book), we’ve been overjoyed by the announcement that a Game of Thrones Monopoly board will soon become available for purchase.
Our Star Wars Monopoly board has taken a back seat in our geeky affections recently as we got tired of building colonies on Tatooine only to have them destroyed. However, we did get hours upon hours of fun out of the game; board games really bring out the best and worst in us all!
The official Game of Thrones Twitter feed gave us a sneaky peak of the board and of who will be in charge of our golden dragons. “The Iron Bank is the Iron Bank”, their Tweet reads. Let’s hope that once we get our copy we’ll not be quite as indebted as the Iron Throne itself is to the Braavosi bankers.
Based originally on the streets of Atlantic City, more than 300 licensed versions of Monopoly have hit the shelves since its original 1934 version. Whilst there have been reports of games lasting just 45 minutes, Monopoly is notorious for dragging on, with players clawing back their wealth from the banker to fight it out to the bitter end. The longest Monopoly game on record lasted a whopping 70 days, which is more than likely longer than Joffrey Baratheon’s reign as King of The Andals and The First Men.
A game of power, money and control, Monopoly is the perfect boardgame home for the Game of Thrones to unfold; the greed of the characters we love to hate is a key driving point in each thread of the multi-faceted plot. Navigating the board itself will be a white walker, a raven, a crown and an iron throne amongst other player pieces. Who will take Winterfell? Who will be sent to the wall? And just how many players will die? Winter is coming after all, and all men must die.
Will our very own Game of Thrones take as many twists and turns as its on-screen counterpart? We can’t wait to find out…
