On the 9th day of Christmas my true love gave to me…Nine Ladies Dancing. To celebrate the 9th day before Christmas, we’re taking a journey to northern England.

Within the Derbyshire Peak District of England lies a small upland area called Stanton Moor. Stanton Moor is well known for its naturally grazing plains and unique, ancient stone circles. These legendary stone circles date back to the Bronze Age, and could be over 4,000 years old. The most significant of these stone circles is the famous Nine Ladies.
Nine Ladies is a stone circle that actually contains ten stones (one fell over and was discovered many years after the others). The nine stones that remain upright are still a mystery to archaeologists. This puzzling stone circle forms a ring that measures 38 x 34 feet (11.5 x 10.5 metres) in diameter, possibly forming some sort of meeting place for ancient seasonal events. Many stone circles from this time period represent burial sites, which could be another possible meaning behind the nine stones.
Folk tradition gives us a more fascinating and abstract meaning for the Nine Ladies Stone Circle. Legend has it that nine ladies were dancing on a Sunday to a fiddler who happened to be the King Stone. He turned them into stone as punishment for dancing on the Sabbath and the nine ladies have been trapped ever since. The King Stone lies 131 feet (40 meters) from the Dancing Ladies and boasts its own graffiti: ‘Bill Stumps’ is written on the King Stone, which Charles Dickens makes a reference to in his book “The Pickwick Papers”.
Although the mystery of the Nine Ladies Stone Circle still baffles us, the “9 Ladies Dancing” in “The Twelve Days of Christmas” is known to represent the 9 Fruits of the Holy Spirit as found in Galatians. These Fruits are: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. The holiday season is a great time to love a little more, be a little more generous, and find true happiness in our lives. May this Christmas be a time of joy and kindness for all.
