May the Force be With You…Again
What can we expect from Abrams’ approach to the newest Star Wars? Check out the teaser and see what we have to say about it.
There appear to be mixed emotions and opinions over the new Star Wars teaser, but despite this it appears that everyone is at least excited to see something new from the Star Wars trilogies. And by everyone, I mean Star Wars fans. Watch the teaser here to get caught up if you’re still in the dark.
Star Wars is continually talked about as the greatest sci-fi movie to ever hit the theaters. Whether you agree with this or not, it was without doubt a revolutionary idea in the fantastical world of science fiction. The original Star Wars was released in 1977, and made $35,906,661 in the first weekend. It went on to gross $775,398,007 overall. To put this into perspective, the second highest grossing movie that year was only at $337,000,000. It’s safe to say that the first three Star Wars movies are iconic in the film industry, and that George Lucas became a legend for them, even if his subsequent prequel trilogy earned him significant criticism.
The franchise seems to be changing slightly as the seventh installment is filmed. J.J Abrams is taking over as writer and director, and although quite different from George Lucas, it is a relief to have a competent sci-fi director taking the reins as it would be a shame to have a ‘Die Hard’ style director continue the saga.
The cast looks promising. Abrams is bringing back Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. Although there is no word yet as to how prominent their character roles are, it’s good to know that we’ll get to see Luke, Han and Leia once again. Andy Serkis appears to be one of the main characters, a casting decision that seems to make complete sense considering his roles in various other sci-fi movies (Gollum, anyone?). Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson and Daisy Riddle have all been confirmed as significant cast members too. One of the most exciting new announcements is that Warwick Davis will be back, meaning that we can expect those fuzzy, little Ewoks once again.
The teaser looks awesome. As a huge fan of Star Wars, I can’t wait for this one to come out. It was good to see the original stormtroopers (with a bit of a facelift), a Sith Lord wielding a cross guarded claymore, and of course, the Millennium Falcon. It is likely that under the helm of a new director, studio, and producer there will be differences from the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy, but with the inclusion of the key original cast members we can only hope that these differences are positive!
Kathleen Kennedy, one of the key producers of “The Force Awakens”, explained that they will be using every tool in the box to make the newest Star Wars movie. She emphasized that they will be going back to the roots of the original movies, using real locations with special effects. We can expect a mix of CGI with practical filmmaking.
It’s easy to see in the trailer that we will get a large dose of everything we love: explosions, weird droids (in this case, some kind of rolling ball), and fast-flying X-Wings. John Williams has again provided the music score so in addition to the classic Star Wars theme song, we can expect some exciting newly composed additions.
We have over a year before we’ll get to see “The Force Awakens”. In the meantime, we have the internet to keep us informed. Look for reliable sources such as starwars.com or imdb.com to stay in the loop, and avoid rumors that may just be people’s hopes and wishes for the new movie.
The release of this teaser is proof that the internet is the fastest and most efficient way to spread information with thousands of blogs posting their own thoughts, theories and opinions, and every news source in America already making some sort of reference to the newest addition to the Star Wars family.
