The Cult of the Handwriting Font
There was a time when comic sans ms and brush script were as close as you could get to handwriting fonts. But the game has changed.
There are so many handwriting fonts to choose from today that even Google has dedicated a section of its search engine to them, alongside images, maps and news. On Google Fonts, you can even find out which fonts are trending.
Believe it or not, though, as a family of typefaces, decorative fonts became popular around the 19th century, when linotype machines were used to print words on posters, newspapers and magazines. The demand for more eye-catching fonts came with the boom in advertising, as the predecessors of Satchi & Satchi were trying to outdo each other in catching the public’s attention.
Today, it’s still creative types like publishing houses, media agencies, and start-up tech companies that drive the demand for hand-written or calligraphic fonts. However, as more and more of these companies put their signs above their doors, the demand marches on.
