Why Administrators Choose to Use ConVirt in Virtualization Environments
ConVirt is a tool used by many administrators for monitoring and administrating virtual environments. Although there are probably many comparable tools, none have an open-source option. Up until recently, admins could only use this tool to monitor and maintain Xen and Kernel Based Virtual Machine for virtualization. However, now many IT managers use it on Linux servers to transfer files from the private network to their virtualized environment. Its primary benefit is that it allows for a central management console on one work station, even if the network is spread across thousands of work stations and many different servers. If you are undecided as to the benefits of ConVirt, the following five features could help make up your mind.
1. Open Source
ConVirt comes in an open source version, which makes it accessible to any network administrator. Better still, even this free open-source version is capable of managing multiple hypervisors, which include VMware, KVM and Xen.
2. Easy to Use
ConVirt works as a front end option to your existing hypervisor’s tools, and provides extended features that are unavailable in the standalone hypervisor. It offers extended manageability from just one interface.
3. Different Options Available
ConVirt comes in three different versions: open source, enterprise and Enterprise cloud. The purpose is to meet different client needs. The open source version allows you to try the tool and if you need additional features, easily upgrade to another option.
4. Easy to Install
The ConVirt CMS application is compatible with most Linux, KVM or Xen servers. The system installs quickly, but you do need to make sure to open all the ports on your CMS and manage servers which you wish to use with the ConVirt system.
5. One-Stop Management
Once the ConVirt system is installed, access the management console through your IP address followed by the number 8081, as in the following example: “http://youripaddress:8081.” The default login is admin/admin, which will bring up your main console. The console offers a simple navigation panel on the left, the display panel in the center, and the task results at the bottom of the page. This allows you to manage the virtual processes from one main window.
Bottom Line
ConVirt offers combination of both open-source and proprietary technologies that allow administrators to easily manage data source resources between the networks, private cloud and public cloud resources, all from one management interface.
